Keiki and Adolescent Therapy
As parents, we know kids and teens here face many challenges that can impact their mental health and overall development. From school pressures and social conflicts to ‘Ohana issues and their internal struggles with confidence, identity, anxiety, and depression, these challenges can often feel overwhelming for keiki to navigate alone.
Seeking and exploring therapy support for your child demonstrates your concern and dedication to your child's happiness and health that sends a message to your child that there is no shame in seeking help when we are struggling. Mahalo for being a supportive role model to your keiki!
Here at Island Mind Therapy, we provide psychology, or counseling / talk therapy services to support your keiki.
Why therapy for keiki?
Counseling for keiki, adolescents, or teens plays a crucial role in nurturing mental and emotional well-being. Professional therapy (also known as counseling) provides a safe and supportive space for children, teenagers, and families to explore their feelings, thoughts, and experiences. It offers a confidential environment where youth can express themselves freely without fear of judgment. Through therapy, kids and teens can gain insight into their emotions and behaviors, develop healthier coping skills, and learn effective problem-solving skills.
Benefits of keiki and adolescent counseling / talk therapy include:
Kids and teens learn how to deal with stress, worry, and tough feelings in a healthy way during therapy.
Therapy gives kids and teens a safe space to find their strengths, build their confidence, and feel positive about who they are.
When kids work through their feelings in therapy, they often do better in school because they can focus more and feel happier.
Therapy supports kids and teens as they grow up, helping them understand their emotions and handle challenges better.
For children and teens who have experienced trauma, or adverse life events, therapy provides a safe space to process their experiences, heal emotional wounds, and develop coping strategies to move forward.
Therapy can help kids learn how to make friends easier, deal with peer pressure, and set healthy boundaries.
Therapists work with kids and teens to address challenging behaviors and develop positive coping mechanisms, helping them make better choices and improve their overall behavior at home, school, and in other settings.
Through therapy, kids and teens learn how to solve problems and make healthy choices that work for them.
Adolescence is a time of self-discovery and therapy offers a supportive environment for teens to explore their identity, values, beliefs, and aspirations, fostering a sense of self-confidence and authenticity.
Types of Therapy for Keiki and Adolescents
There are many therapy modalities tailored to meet the unique needs of children, teenagers, and families. Some of our approaches include:
Play Therapy: Utilizing play and creative activities, play therapy allows children to express themselves nonverbally and explore their emotions in a safe and supportive environment.
Art Therapy: Art therapy encourages self-expression through various art forms, promoting emotional healing, and providing insight into thoughts and feelings.
Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT helps individuals identify and challenge negative thought patterns and behaviors, teaching practical skills to manage stress, anxiety, and other mental health concerns.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing): EMDR helps individuals process traumatic experiences and reduce the emotional distress associated with them, leading to healing and resolution.
Family Therapy: Family therapy focuses on improving communication, resolving conflicts, and strengthening relationships within the family system. It addresses issues that impact the family as a whole, promoting understanding and unity. It's great for dealing with changes, arguments, or just making your family stronger.
Sibling Therapy: Sibling relationships play a significant role in a child's development, but they can also be sources of conflict and tension. This can be especially true in blended families, adoptive families, or foster families, where there will be some major adjustments to living together. If siblings are having a hard time getting along, some therapists offer special sessions just for them. These sessions help siblings understand each other better, solve problems, and become closer friends.
Group Therapy: Group therapy provides a supportive environment where children and teens can connect with peers facing similar challenges, learn from each other, and develop social skills.
Adult Therapy
Psychiatry and / or therapy for young adults, adults, or older adults can help address many types of issues including but not limited to depression, anxiety, trauma, conflict, grief, stress management and general life transitions. Group Therapy
Group Therapy - Finding Strength Together
In addition to individual therapy, we provide a variety of therapeutic groups. These groups offer a safe and supportive environment for individuals to share experiences, learn from others, and develop new skills.
Group therapy can be an effective way to address specific issues, such as stress management, grief and loss, and relationship challenges, while also building a sense of community and belonging
Psychiatry & Medication Management
Our psychiatrists have specialized training in diagnosing and treating complex mental health conditions through medication management.
If you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health condition such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, PTSD, or similar, a psychiatrist may be a good place to start.
Other indications that you should see a psychiatrist include:
Your primary care doctor or another doctor thinks you may benefit from the services of a psychiatrist and provides a referral
You are interested in taking medication to treat a mental health condition
Your symptoms are severe enough to regularly interfere with your everyday life
First, a diagnostic examination is performed to evaluate the current problem with attention to its physical, genetic, medical, developmental, emotional, cognitive, educational, family, peer, and social components.
Next, the psychiatrist arrives at a diagnosis and “diagnostic formulation” which are shared with the patient.
The psychiatrist then designs a treatment plan which considers all the components and discusses these recommendations with the patient.
Integrated Approach: Psychiatry / Medication Management Together With Therapy / Counseling
In some cases, a combination of medication and therapy is the right course of action. Working with your primary care doctor, you can determine what’s best for you. It is well established that mental and emotional problems, and the pain they cause, cannot be solved solely by medication in the long-term.
Instead of treating the symptom, therapy addresses the root cause of our distress and the behavior patterns that curb our progress. One can best achieve sustainable growth and a greater sense of well-being with an integrative approach to wellness.
